I was born to British parents in North York, Ontario, Canada. Naturally, as a Canadian, I played hockey and also soccer growing up as a kid. I attended Markham District High School and then eventually Acadia University, where I was a two-sport athlete in football and hockey. Fitness has always been a part of my life. In the beginning, I did it just to try to look good. In college, I did it to keep my spot in the lineup. We won the National Championships in 1995 and were inducted into the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
After my father died of a heart attack in 2007, I knew that it was time for me to take care of myself. I was always in pretty good shape, but I needed to be more pragmatic in my approach. In the past I've been my own worst enemy. I used to compare myself to others. I don't anymore. I am comfortable with who I am and the person I have become. I do not need others to help me feel validated. I have a teenage son, and instilling a strong work ethic in him and setting a great example for him to follow is something I take pride in. He is learning that nothing is given to you, it's earned. You have to put in the work if you want to achieve your goals.
I enjoy coaching and watching people improve. Humans have an innate ability to do things that they thought were once not achievable. I also like to push others to get uncomfortable. I know in the moment, they don't like it, they don't enjoy it, but the results speak for themselves. Sometimes, I get a look from a member, who states, I really don't want to do this. I smile and say, you are doing it and YES YOU CAN!
